    Clickhouse was created to be fast. ClickHouse is a column-store database, built for high-speed queries. Benchmark tests demonstrate processing speeds that are 100 to 1,000 times faster than that of traditional methods. During real-time import, Clickhouse has a 50 to 200 MB/s high throughput.

    What is a column-store database?

    Simply put, a column-store database is a database management system that stores data in columns instead of traditional row databases. The purpose of this relational database is to process petabytes of data from several repositories or data sources and write and read data to and from hard disk storage. This significantly speeds up the return of a query. Important advantages of this kind of DBMS are:

    What makes ClickHouse different from others?

    In data warehousing, common databases use traditional rows of data while Clickhouse is a column-store database that uses columns of data separately. With analytics queries, the Clickhouse cloud approach offered by Kamino has some performance advantages.

    1. Reduced disk IO – Analytics queries typically rely on select columns. Traditional databases have to read each row, with the columns, from the disk. A column-store DBMS, however, focuses on relevant columns from the disk. With high-cardinality analytics databases, disk IO is decreased by at least 100 times or more. This creates a host of benefits since IO is typically where performance gets slowed down for analytics.
    2. Compression – As mentioned, Clickhouse relies on structured data compression algorithms. In general, columns store very similar data, so compressing a file with repeating values can be very efficient. 20 times compression can be achieved in a ClickHouse environment. Extremely compressed data results in even less disk IO.
    3. Data locality – With a high-cardinality analytics query, data reads are adjoining rather than spread across the disk. These queries work hand-in-hand with the OS’s read-ahead cache.
